As the world continues to grapple with the devastating impact of climate change, leaders and representatives from 197 countries gathered in Glasgow, Scotland for the 26th UN Conference of Parties (COP26). The conference, which ran from October 31st to November 12th, aimed to further global efforts in mitigating the effects of climate change and achieving net-zero emissions by the middle of the century.

During the course of the conference, various agreements and pledges were made by participating countries and organizations. Here is a list of some of the most significant agreements reached at COP26:

1. Glasgow Leaders’ Declaration on Forests: Leaders of more than 100 countries pledged to end deforestation by 2030 and restore degraded land. This declaration aims to reduce emissions caused by deforestation and land use changes.

2. Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero: Over 450 financial institutions, representing $130 trillion in assets, committed to align their investments with the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

3. Methane Pledge: 108 countries signed the Methane Pledge, agreeing to reduce methane emissions by 30% by 2030. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that has a warming effect 84 times greater than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period.

4. Adaptation Action Agenda: 70 countries pledged to boost their efforts towards climate adaptation measures, such as improving water management, enhancing coastal protection, and strengthening agricultural systems.

5. Just Transition Declaration: Over 40 countries committed to transitioning to clean energy in a way that is just and inclusive, taking into consideration the needs of workers and disadvantaged communities.

6. Global Methane Pledge: The United States and the European Union launched the Global Methane Pledge, which aims to reduce methane emissions by 30% by 2030 and encourage other countries to join the pledge.

7. Energy Transition Mechanism: The mechanism aims to mobilize private sector financing to help developing countries transition to clean energy sources and accelerate the deployment of renewable energy technologies.

These agreements are crucial in the fight against climate change. They represent a collective effort towards a more sustainable future, where the health of the planet and its inhabitants are prioritized. However, their success depends on the commitment and action of participating countries and organizations. COP26 may have ended, but the work towards a net-zero future continues.
